There are a lot of blogs. You can read about everything from prayer to how to open a business. (Or how to write a blog) If there are so many, you might ask, then why am I starting one? Well, I DO feel there is a gap, so to speak—a place where we, as the Church, are lacking. I don’t mean that as a criticism. However, I do believe that when an area of need is identified, it should be addressed.
I have visited many churches in my lifetime and in all their programming, outreaches and missions, the mission field in their own congregations are left untended. The mission field to which I refer is young women.
Paul teaches in Titus that the older women should teach the younger. If it was instructed to teach, then why aren’t we seeing it very often? There could be many reasons for the lack of guidance in this area.
Older women feel they don’t have time
Women have a lot of responsibility. Whether in the home or in a career, women are busy. Sometimes handling both in-home and
out-of-home duties, women are master jugglers. Husbands, children, household management
And other engagements are not small tasks to manage. Women may feel they don’t have the extra time to give to anything else outside their immediate household. And for some, this may be true. It might not be the “right time” in your life to extend into outreach ministry. However, for many women, it is an opportunity to share wisdom and skills to a younger generation.
Younger women seem disinterested
Of course, this statement is an overgeneralization. While there may be some younger women currently preoccupied with other things, there are many young women who hunger for the guidance which an older mentor could provide.
There’s already a women’s ministry at my church
So let’s be clear. There is a difference in an organized women’s ministry and mentoring. While organized women’s ministry is a necessary outreach in the church, mentoring is also needed. Women’s ministry often focuses on the women’s group as a whole and extends into community outreach. While these are great extensions of the church and should be pursued, personal mentoring is also needed and should not be overlooked. Women need connection and a safe place to ask questions and receive instruction.
I encourage you to continue in prayer regarding your purpose in Christ. Could it be that you have a calling to be used in this mission field of teaching a younger generation of women?
