Titus 2
Old Women Teach
"Aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."
So this is our instruction from Paul. It is so interesting that the Spirit inspires Paul to devote a section in Scripture to "aged women". Â
I am a firm believer in active participation in the body of Christ. Whether that means you sing, work with the children, keep the nursery, or maintain the building and grounds--every joint is to supply (Ephesians 4:16) In other words, the person sitting next to you in the pew is depending on you doing your part. Â
Paul clearly describes, through inspiration of the Spirit, an important role for aged women. Why aged women? I often tell the illustration of pilgrims discovering new lands. As they developed new forts, towns, cities--they cleared lands and advanced territories. I can only imagine what this massive project entailed. There were probably forests to be cut for use of the wood, huge stumps to be extricated from the ground, irrigation to be dug--and this most likely doesn't begin to describe what it was like. Settlers in new lands did all of this for freedom, for liberty, for a better life, and so their children would benefit. What good would it have done--what progress would have been made if those who went before didn't clear the path for those coming behind? What if the next generation had to clear the same forests and pull the same stumps as the generation before?
Spiritually, we have a huge opportunity to "clear" the way for those following us. When we have already been through the weeds and worn a clear path, why should they struggle with proverbial machetes and sickles to free what we should have already made plain?
"Aged" women have the wonderful opportunity to share our knowledge and wisdom with the younger generation. We know what it's like to juggle a job, a husband, children and a home. We have already been through marital disagreements, child-rearing mistakes, and career adjustments. Let's not miss this invitation outlined in Titus 2 to contribute to other women. Let's not forsake this calling to impart what we have learned to our younger sisters in Christ.
